Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain that are attached to the front surfaces of teeth to modify the shape and color of the teeth. Veneers can provide a conservative treatment option for closing small spaces between teeth and treating broken or chipped teeth, crooked or misshapen teeth, or permanently stained or discolored teeth. In most cases, a very minimal amount of enamel is removed from the front surfaces of the teeth in order to prevent the veneered teeth from looking too bulky or thick.  Once the veneers have been constructed and the esthetics have been approved by the patient, the veneers are then “bonded” or permanently cemented to the front surfaces of the teeth.

This patient illustrates two concerns remedied by Dr. Benting.

First, the outward protrusion of the six upper front teeth and the desire to have the color of the teeth evenly matched. The dental treatment plan included a combination of full coverage restorations, commonly called crowns or caps, and partial coverage porcelain veneers.

Due to the nature of these alterations, custom designed temporary restorations were made first. This allows for slight adjustments in the shape, color and appearance to assure exactness. The the soft tissues around the teeth responded favorably with routine dental hygiene protocol.

In the next case, Dr. Benting's patient was concerned of the irregular size and appearance of her teeth when she smiled.

The patient expressed concern with the smaller size and flare of the upper left lateral incisor and wanted a more evenly shaped smile.

The dental treatment plan included porcelain veneers on her right and left lateral incisors adjacent to her front teeth. The final result produced an evenly matched shape, size and color and created a uniform, attractive smile.

What does getting porcelain veneers involve?

In most cases, veneer application can be completed in only two office visits. The teeth are prepared by lightly buffing and shaping the surface to allow for the thickness of the veneer. A mold or impression of the teeth is taken and a shade (color) will then be chosen by you and Dr. Benting. Temporary restorations will be placed on the teeth allowing you to fully evaluate the shape and color. Any necessary modifications are then made prior to the construction of your definitive restorations. On the second visit, the veneers are tried in and any necessary adjustments are made. The veneers are then permanently cemented to the teeth. Proper brushing, flossing and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new veneers.
